Ethical, British Fashion news, interviews, family travel and our place to shout about independent brands we love!

As the night's draw in...

Lydia Mansi

Rather than bemoaning the end of summer, we are (whisper it) loving Autumn. It means the return of our signature merino wool hats this week on the site - perfect for those crisp morning dog walks (we've all got pups now at Lala & Bea HQ - maybe dog coats should be our next venture?!).

We're also seeing our cosy, hand-loomed pure new wool house throws flying out the door - as people are snuggling down in the evenings - what are you watching this autumn? We cannot wait to binge watch Ozark second series on Netflix and we're loving Wanderlust and Bodyguard on BBC.

Autumn also = comfort food. Jamie Oliver's new 'Jamie Cooks Italy' book (£26, Michael Joseph) is 140 recipes full of gorgeous authentic pasta, gnocchi and slow-cook stews that are family-friendly and perfect cosy fodder.

We wrote a post last week about changing up our skincare for autumn to repair any summer damage and protect it from the change in seasons. Whilst we love the autumnal shift, our skin definitely doesn't - we're adding a couple of drops of our 'Get up and Glow' facial oil to our night time skincare routine and we're already seeing a difference in softness and glow.

Working from home, we consider these sheepskin slippers from The Small House (£42) to be our equivalent of workwear. They are super snuggly and the hardwearing leather soles mean they really last.

We are going to be at the Brixton Bazaar at The Department Store this October. It's going to be  3-days of retail, events, talks and workshops. More details to come!

New term, new start

Cal Begley

back to school

The Summer is drawing to a close, as the uniforms are ironed and name stamped. Gradually pictures have been appearing on my Facebook feed of kids in tiny uniforms, or tiny kids in big uniforms heading to school for a new term and the excitement of catching up with their friends or making new ones. Sunny days and endless warm evenings are drifting into the memory banks as our minds turn to routines and layering once again in the count down to Christmas. Here are our back to school top pics...

1. LOLLIOP back to school year wall planner

Practical but very stylish - with a whole academic year to view and space to write in term dates, appointments, deadlines, holidays, birthdays and so on!

2. MINI  MONTII from EATWELL - 350ml Insulated Water Bottle

Meet Yellow Mini Montii....If your kid’s giving him the runaround, he won’t get hot and bothered, just watch him work his cooling magic on those rosy red cheeks. The reusable, colourful and stylish water bottle your kids will love to use!

3. STAMPTASTIC name stamp

THE FASTEST WAY TO NAME ALL YOUR BELONGINGS! A personalised stamp usable on most fabrics, metal, wood & some plastics. No more sewing or ironing on labels. No more losing your pencil case or P.E. kit! Now you can just stamp everything! Transparent block for accurate, easy positioning.

4. PINK PINEAPPLE Personalised School Bag with Varsity Name

Personalised school or music book bag with a name of your choice and in a selection of colours to match your shields school uniform. Nylon School Bag with webbing detachable strap and internal zipped pocket for lots of pencils and odds and ends. This is a really tough bag.

5. LALA & BEA Personalised Design you Own PE bag

They’ll never lose their kit bag again with our personalised organic cotton gym bags! Choose your hand printed letter for them to colour in and make their own with a set of non-toxic fabric pens, for the ultimate personalisation!

6. M&S pack of 7 pairs of school socks

The start of a new term wouldn’t be the same without a trip to M&S. The go-to school shop for generations of parents, year on year they never disappoint. With 7 sets of socks in a pack you have a school weeks worth and a couple of spares and the brilliance of the M&S sock is the sewn in size into the inner rib so you know which socks belong to which kid! Genius!

Post summer skin repair

Sun-kissed skin, freckly noses and looser limbs... there is no denying that summer applies that real-life 'Instagram filter' to our skin and helps us look and feel more relaxed... but after 3 months of sun, sea, salt, sand and dehydration - this month it's all about repairing the damage and getting back your glow - let us help you...

best night facial oil.jpg

Summer dehydration can cause fine lines and a general dullness to your skin. Look to boost your skin's hydration levels by adding a Hyaluronic Acid to your skincare routine, increase your water intake and add our Get Up and Glow Facial Oil to your skincare routine this autumn to lock in the moisture. Roll back any sun damage thanks to the healing powers of Frankincense, while nutrient-packed Sea Buckthorne Oil will nourish and renew. Thinking ahead, the antioxidant-rich green tea oil will protect your skin from the change in weather later in the month.

Sun cream and sweat can block pores and cause breakouts - look for a facial wash containing Salicylic Acid to clear up any breakouts fast.

A build up of dead skin cells can also contribute to patchy, rough and uneven skin. Look for a chemical exfoliant (like glycolic acid, or fruit enzyme formulas for sensitive skins) that will 'eat away' the dead stuff and increase cell turnover, without scratching and damaging new skin underneath, unlike physical exfoliants. Not only will they smooth skin but brighten, too.

It's not just our face - salt, chlorine and sunshine can leave us with parched, scaly, dull limbs in need of a serious injection of moisture. Our Nourish Oil is the perfect addition to your bath, or slather it directly on skin. Rich in oat oil to seal in moisture and rosehip oil for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties to help regenerate skin. With sweet orange, geranium, bergamot and cardamom - it's a beautiful de-stressing, soothing addition to your beauty regime.

best cream for eczema.jpg

If you've got heels that could sand floorboards and dry patches that could use some extra strength TLC - massaging in some of our ultra skin-softening Nourish Balm
will help your skin rejuvenate fast - rich in shea butter and rosehip oil - we have had some glowing customer reviews sharing just how much it has soothed eczema flare-ups in little ones, too.

Top family friendly beaches in Devon and Cornwall

Lydia Mansi

Whilst we love exotic, foreign holidays (and the guaranteed sunshine!) there is nothing quite like a British beach when the sun is shining... we have been escaping the city to the Devon and Cornwall coastline for over a decade - here's a round-up of our top family friendly beaches...

Porthcurnick beach

Gerrans Bay, particularly at the Rosevine Hotel, were some of the first family holidays we took when our kids were small. The hotel is an amazing 'New England' style villa, right at the top of the beach - with a self-catering/hotel hydrid set-up. It means you've got the flexibility of a kitchenette in your apartment - yet all the luxury of a boutique hotel (restaurant, room service, indoor pool). It also means Porthcurnick beach is your back yard, including the famous, Hidden Hut - look out for their evening events - 'Lobster & Chips' is a winner and watch the sun go down with some of the best seafood in the South West.

Hope Cove - by Lala & Bea co-founder, Katie Greatrix

Family friendly beaches Devon

The dramatic coastline of South Devon with all its hidden coves and caramel sandy beaches has long been our 'go-to' for British summer hols. Swerve the mayhem in Salcombe and Dartmouth in the summer months and head to Hope Cove.
"It reminds me of my childhood weeks of playing on the beach at my grandparents in North Devon. South Devon is a fraction closer to us and we have just fallen in love with the little cove - heading back for a dreamy 10 days with friends and family every year since the children were babies -  it now feels like home from home, here are my top 3 tips:

Head to Bantham beach - great for bodyboarding and fab food trucks (if you don't quite have time to make a picnic!)  Note to self: £6 parking charge as it's privately owned! £££

Beach house at south Milton is great for food and icecreams - it's a National Trust beach so parking is free if you are a member always a bonus!

We make an annual pilgrimage to Cranchs, the infamous sweet shop in Salcombe - one of the children's treats of the holiday!" - Katie

Mawgan Porth

Mawgan Porth beach

Pre-kids, we loved escaping to the amazing eco Scarlet Hotel (we now stay next door at the Bedruthan Steps hotel which is equally fab). Mawgan Porth beach itself is everything you'd want in a family beach - great surf for teens and oodles of clean sand for littlies. The beach is vast so never feels too crowded, although get there early for any hope of parking. The foodie mecca of Padstow (or Pad-stein as the locals call it due to the presence of not 1, but 5 Rick Stein eateries) is just a pebble-throw away.

branscombe beach jurassic coast devon

Situated slap-bang in the middle of the Jurassic Coast (if you've got dinosaur mad kids, the Seaton Jurassic centre 10 mins down the coast is a must) feels just a bit Enid Blyton. Take the windy lanes down through the pretty thatched village and end up on the long, pebbled beach. There's easy access from the car park and a lovely green in front of the quaint Sea Shanty cafe - always quieter than Sidmouth or Lyme Regis and the clearest water, too.

TAKE 3: Beach essentials

Here are 3 Lala & Bea must-haves, for any beach holiday:

Ethical beachwear - all the kit you need this summer!

Lydia Mansi

This summer we've really noticed new ethical brands emerging who are creating innovative products from ocean plastic - from sunnies to swimmers. We've also found the UK's first ethical beach towel company - responsibly sourced, light-weight hammam style towels which are fast-drying and perfect for the beach, plus our best-selling picnic blanket takes centre-stage - perfect for those endless evenings and beach bbqs - just add SPF!

Our brand-new organic cotton beach totes launch this week, big enough to fit all our kit in and sturdy enough to cope with beach life! beach tote £22

We love everything about Batoko swimsuits - the 'no wedgie' cut, secure straps and mid-rise leg make them practical and comfortable enough for swimming, paddle-boarding, beach cricket and even pro sandcastle building. They are digitally printed with eco ink and made from harvest ocean plastic - love, love, love. Cockatoo print swimmers, £40

We're not saying you *have* to put wine in your recycled plastic, BPA-free Dopper water bottle, £12.50 - but it comes with a nifty wine glass style lid - rude not to.

We are so excited to see more and more fashion products being made from ocean plastic - like these Surf shades from Sea2See - visit their site to learn more about what they're doing to turn the tide on plastic in our seas. Surf shades, £75

Our signature rainbow star picnic blanket is the perfect centre piece for your beach day. Hand-woven in Wales it's larger than most, with a waterproof backing so no soggy bottoms on the sand. It also comes with a handy strap for easy carrying to the beach, picnic blanket £84

The perfect accessories for our picnic blanket - this bamboo crockery set from Bobo & Boo is practical, sturdy and we love these 'Coastal blue' shades -  bamboo bowl set, £16

Frills and love hearts - we couldn't resist! From Mini Rodini, these swimmers are made with 80% recycled plastic - including old fishing nets, with in-build UV protection, too. Love heart swimsuit, £49

How genius is this bucket and spade set made from sugar cane! 100% biodegradable so no need for guilt when you invariably leave a piece on the beach! Bucket and spade set, £9

Traditional, lightweight handmade Hammam style towels from Hammam Havlu, ethically sourced from Turkey and printed in Hertfordshire - from £25
